I saw a billboard adverstising the Alberta Agenda on the side of the highway while driving to Calgary the other day. I thought I'd check it out and while they don't support leaving Canada they do, at least, support more power for Alberta.
The point is to allow me to voice my opinion over the state of politics in Canada. We are working with a hundred plus year old governing model that I believe no longer suits our time and needs - if it ever did.
I'd like to think human beings are smarter than we have displayed thus far on our short stay on this planet. It seems to me that we haven't learned much from the days of the great political philosophers as we are still struggling to figure out how best to balance individual freedom with social order.
Our current method, the Westminster system, along with the notion of representative government is antiquated, inefficient, unfair, prone to corruption, expensive, and I could go on.
There are too many people in our society that aren't pulling their own weight, for whatever reasons, and expect the rest of us to support them. This model doesn't work and is what I believe a chief cause of the huge deficit and debt Canada has. We need to put our heads together to come up with a better way and it starts with much less federal government and more individual, family, community, and provincial powers and responsibilities.
